Introduction
A wooden structure containing two classrooms was first constructed under the leadership of the then Bishop of Polynesia, the Right Reverend Bishop Kempthorne . The school was known as St. Augustine’s Anglican Mission School. Opening its doors on the 1st of June 1937, the then Head Teacher, Mr. Alexander Thakur, St. Augustine’s had a total of 74 boys in classes 1-3.
The Anglican Mission gave the school to the Government in 1947. The Government managed the school for 50 years and in 1997 gave the school to the people of Wailevu to manage. St. Augustine’s Government School officially became St. Augustine’s Public School.
Through many changes the school has grown from strength to strength catering for the demands and needs of the students. From humble beginnings 70 years ago St. Augustine’s has stamped its mark as one of the prominent schools in the Northern Division.
St. Augustine’s is a place where the children, the future of our village, our district and nation will get their training, literacy and education. It is our obligation to provide good education to the children we have brought into this world. The school’s importance to the development of Wailevu can not be ignored.
